RFC #000001 DNS Naming convention

#1

RFC: #000001
Name: DNS Naming convention
Owner: WACAN
Purpose: Define settings for DNS name creation for WACAN.

Client Interfaces

Format

interface-name.router-hostname.client-site.state.can

Examples

GigabitEthernet0.beechcore.beechboro.wa.can
Vlan69.beechcore.beechboro.wa.can

Notes

Verbose names, indicating interface speed are preferred, if using a vlan interface, the vlan number prefixed with ‘Vlan’ will suffice.

AP Network Interfaces

Format

interface-name.router-hostname.ap-site.state.can

Examples

GigabitEthernet0.tellytubby.rolleystone.wa.can
Vlan1001.tellytubby.roleystone.wa.can

Notes

Verbose names, indicating interface speed are preferred, if using a vlan interface, the vlan number prefixed with ‘Vlan’ will suffice.

Radio Management DNS

Access Points

Format

ssid.ap.ap-site.state.can

Example

belmont-sw.ap.belmont.wa.can

Notes

Client Links

Format

client-site.cpe.ap-site.state.can

Example

rivernet.cpe.belmont.wa.can

Notes

Point To Point Links

Format

remote-site.lnk.local-site.state.can

Examples

redcliffe.lnk.belmont.wa.can
belmont.lnk.redcliffe.wa.can

Notes

Loopback Interface

Format

router-name.site.state.can

Example

earth.belmont.wa.can

Notes

Loopback addresses have advantages with their ‘always up’ nature. They can be used for DNS entries by associating the loopback IP address to an assigned hostname, thereby making the router always reachable via its DNS name as long as the router has IP connectivity. NMS products can easily add routers via the loopback addresses and it eliminates the guess work as to what IP address the router should be added with.

Other Networking hardware (switches etc.)

Format

hostname.local-site.state.can
interface.hostname.local-site.state.can

Examples

toughswitch.redcliffe.wa.can
FastEthernet0-1.sh-brdr1.beechboro.wa.can

Notes

This isn’t as critical as the other infrastructure, but if you’re looking for a guide, we recommend the above.

#2

Thanks @alexa!

Did anyone else have any ideas on how we could make this better?

#3

The only change to this that i would recommend is adding .wa before .can, so for example, belmont-sw.ap.belmont.wa.can, rivernet.cpe.belmont.wa.can, redcliffe.lnk.belmont.wa.can, etc.

#4

@DoubleDave agreed.
@alexa Can you set this as a wiki post so we can make the appropriate changes?

#5

@shaneshort I’ve updated the document to reflect @DoubleDave’s suggestion.

The button for converting to wiki does not appear on my toolbar

#6

@alexa yeah that seems to be an admin flag for the moment, I’ll look into that. I’ve set it now.
